Dear Society

Updated: Dec 8, 2020

I think most would say they envisioned 2020 differently. Start of a new decade, the roaring 20's 100 years later. Instead here I sit in my bedroom scared of the current world I live in. Covid-19 the pandemic that has killed thousands, I wish we all took it seriously sooner. It wouldn't be until Tom Hanks and his wife got it for us to realize as a whole that this shit is serious. I didn't go to school the next day, not knowing that March 14th would be my last day of junior year at least in school. To watch the world be affected by the Coronavirus is heartbreaking. To the nurses, doctors, teachers, cashiers, and so many more you do not get paid enough. I've watched endless videos and cried knowing that many on the frontline could not return to their homes in fear of spreading germs to their loved ones. To those on the front line, society is forever indebted to you.

I'm lucky enough to say that I go to a school where in the classroom, everyone that surrounds me is different. My friends are from all different backgrounds and I love them all the more for it. Ahmaud Arbery was killed jogging in a white neighborhood because of the color of his skin. George Floyd's life was taken from him because of the color of his skin. In the past several days thousands have joined together in order to march for the Black Lives Matter Movement. In the news or on social media we've seen looting, graffiti, unarmed peaceful protesters shoved and maced. I am privileged because of the color of my skin. I don't hold the fear of being killed for the color of my skin, for that I am privileged. I will never know the pain that so many hold in their hearts, but I promise to help create change. I promise to educate myself more. To stand up when a racial remark is made. I will never be able to comprehend your pain but I promise to stand with you, because Black Lives Matter. And I never want any friend of mine to have to suffer consequences based on the color of their skin.

Justice For George Floyd
